Winters is a historic town first settled in 1842 as an agricultural center for vegetables, fruit trees, grape vines and livestock. In 1875, when the railroad crossed Yolo County, the town became incorporated, and by 1876 had become a bustling center with three trains coming through daily. Today agriculture remains the core of this community; crops are mainly almonds and walnuts.

Winters is located along Putah Creek and has a population just under 7,000. Due to its size, Winters has been able to retain its picturesque locale and rural appeal. A walk down the National Historic Main Street is like stepping into the past, with many architectural treasures showcased as local restaurants, shops and businesses.
